Nuovi Angoli

Nuove Forme

Context

»Nuovi Angoli Nuove Forme« is a series of watercolors in which structural assemblages are created with the help of stencils, rules are established and broken in order to explore the potential of new constellations and situation.

An essential aspect of my approach is to create tools, schemes and processes that I change, vary and break up step by step as I work with the material. For the »Nuovi Angoli Nuove Forme« series, for example, I developed a stencil system based on 16 basic elements. It allows me to gradually increase the complexity. With each layer of paint, I can discover new images step by step. With each new surface, I question the work in order to decide how to proceed. In this process, I gradually develop the picture, not spontaneously, but mentally, by questioning the work again and again. It is unnecessary to have a fixed idea for the picture at the beginning. I can understand painting as a conversation that arises in the process of a dialog.

Among other things, the paintings explore three aspects that I discovered in conversations: Perspective, pace and permeability. Pace refers to the conditions and skills needed to open up to something new. The feeling of being connected to the inner and outer world is related to pace, as is permeability. I associate permeability with openness and transparency, the aim of dissolving boundaries and limitations. A closer look at the abstract paintings reveals transparencies, subtle color nuances, overlays, translucent elements, the quality of the paper and the pigment. For me, this is like a conversation within the material, in which new structures and constellations emerge.

»People carry their landscapes with them, the way travelers used to cart along their porcelain chamber pots. The stronger their sense of form the more reluctant they are to part with it either.«

— Harold Rosenberg

»As soon as we let go of the universal as a self-fulfilling abstract truth, we must become embroiled in specific situations. And thus it is necessary to begin again, and again, in the middle of things.«

— Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing
