Bio
Nina Gospodin (*1984 in Hamburg, Germany) is a painting researcher. The University of Applied Arts Vienna graduate with a background in both arts and process engineering explores procedures in depth. Her work usually begins with the establishment of a process and is based on a fixed structure, a framework of forms, a resting grid, which is then subjected to a transformation. The properties and qualities of the material guide her decision-making. In this way, changes and mutations form like a network. Unlike in technology, in an artistic approach a process cannot be justified solely by its functional context, aspects injected with freedom gain momentum.
Her work has been exhibited on four continents, including Ulrich Mueller Gallery in Cologne, King's College Cambridge UK, Satchel Projects, Tiger Strikes Asteroid and The Flat Iron Project Space in New York City, the Terrain Biennial in Chicago, Museo Alejandro Berro in Uruguay and Melbourne University in Australia. She has been invited to artist-in-residency programs at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and the Berlin Arts Institute. As a founding member of the international I Found U Collective, she set up a collaboration with barac Mannheim in 2022, which enabled members to work in Mannheim for a month. Gospodin publishes conversations from her artistic research as a podcast. She lives and works in Vienna, Austria.
Artist Statement
My work is characterized by the modular use of templates, which are constantly transformed into new constellations and figurations. A sensitive questioning of the material, its qualities and colors directs the implementation. This process creates a dialog with the forms and materials, the stencils and colors, their relationships and beddings, in order to give them their own voice. In this way, new contexts can emerge from my work that were initially incomprehensible.
An element can behave very differently depending on its surroundings and composition and can subsequently differentiate further together with the others. If it appears massive and heavy at one moment, it suddenly appears floating and light at another. Much of this cannot be conceived in advance, but is only brought about and made visible through actions. In this way, an idea unfolds step by step, which is not conceived in advance, but develops from doing things. Fundamental concepts such as closeness and connectedness, touch, openness, hardness and isolation are thus given a function that is established and experienced. This type of work processing was initially triggered by concepts of the industrial age and digitalization. I was particularly interested in the procedures of rationalization. However, it was important to me to decouple mechanistic thought structures in order to arrive at a free and lively action, to step out of the role of a mere cog in the wheel, so to speak. On the edge of formalism was a buzzword for me, as the open and processual seemed more important to me. I want to make (self-imposed) restrictions flexible and permeable in order to ask:
How can freedom be experienced?
How can I understand freedom as a fact of seeing, feeling and thinking in order to communicate this in my work?
Meine Arbeit ist durch die modulare Verwendung von Schablonen gekennzeichnet, welche ständig einer Wandlung zu neuartigen Konstellationen und Figurationen unterzogen werden. In der Umsetzung kommt dazu eine stete Befragung des Materials zum Einsatz, betreff seiner Eigenschaften und Qualitäten. Dieser Prozess bildet einen Dialog mit den Formen und Stoffen, den Schablonen und Farben, ihren Verhältnissen und Bettungen, um ihnen eine eigene Stimme zuzusprechen. So können sich mir aus dem Tun neue Zusammenhänge zeigen, die zunächst noch nicht fassbar waren.
Ein Element kann sich je nach Umgebung und Beschaffenheit ganz unterschiedlich verhalten und in der Folge mit den anderen gemeinsam weiter ausdifferenzieren. Wirkt es in einem Moment massiv und schwer, so erscheint es im anderen plötzlich schwebend und leicht. Vieles davon lässt sich nicht vorweg konzipieren, sondern wird durch Handlungen erst herbeigeführt und in die Sichtbarkeit gebracht. So entfaltet sich eine Idee Schritt für Schritt, die nicht vorweg konzipiert, sondern sich aus dem Tun mit den Dingen entwickelt. Grundlegende Begriffe wie Nähe und Verbundenheit, Berührung, Öffnung, Härte und Isolation erhalten daraus eine zur Feststellung und Erfahrung gebrachte Funktion. Angestoßen wurde diese Art der Werkprozessierung zunächst anhand von Konzepten des Industriezeitalters und der Digitalisierung. Vorgehensweisen der Rationalisierung haben mich dazu im Besonderen beschäftigt. Mir war es allerdings wichtig, mechanistische Denkstrukturen zu entkoppeln, um in eine freie und lebendige Handlung zu gelangen, sozusagen aus der Rolle eines bloßen Rädchens im Getriebe herauszutreten. Am Rande des Formalismus war für mich ein Schlagwort, da mir das Offene und Prozessuale wichtiger schien. Ich möchte (selbst auferlegte) Einschränkungen beweglich und durchlässig gestalten, um zu fragen:
Wie lässt sich Freiheit erfahren?
Wie kann ich Freiheit als ein Faktum des Sehens, Fühlens und Denkens begreifen, um dieses in meinen Arbeiten mitzuteilen.
